John (Janos) Michael Gura
Also recorded as Janos Gura. At age 17, John (Janos) Michael Gura set out from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to begin a new life for the Gura family in America. He boarded the RMS Carpathia at the Port of Fiume (Croatia) on 22 December 1904, celebrating Christmas, his 18th birthday on 28 December, and New Year's Day during the 16-day crossing.
The Carpathia arrived in New York on 7 January 1905; his name was written on the ship's manifest as Janos Gura, line 28. He carried $15 and was bound for Lowellville, Ohio to join his relative Georg Gura. The full story is told in Journey to America.
In 1907 he met Anna Marie Lucas; they married on 3 February 1908 at Holy Trinity Slovak Catholic Church โ the second-ever wedding in the newly-formed parish. Together they raised fourteen children, listed below.
John was named as a 10 % assignee on US Patent 2,364,780 (Sheet Pack Opening Mechanism, filed 3 July 1943, issued 12 December 1944), with his residence given as Struthers, Ohio.
